Overview

Character:

Tosas are bold and alert dogs with a high level of intelligence. Poised and affectionate, these dogs excel at filling a number of roles, including that of companion, watchdog, or assistance dog.

Country of Origin:

Japan.

History:

This breed was developed in Japan between the years of 1868 and 1912. Originally created by crossing the Kochi with Shikoku dogs, the Tosa was later also crossed with Great Danes, Bull Terriers, and other large European breeds. In the past, the Tosa was primarily used as a fighting dog in Japan and, although it is considered a national treasure, this breed is now quite rare.

Name:

This breed has many additional names, including Tosa Inu, Tosa Ken, Tosa Tōken, Japanese Fighting Dog, Japanese Mastiff, and Tosa Fighting Dog.

Temperament:

Tosas are sensitive, calm, and patient dogs. Although reserved with strangers, these dogs will warm up to previously unknown people when introduced. Tosas are good with children and are fearless protectors.

Care

Training:

Since Tosas are intelligent animals, they require friendly and consistent training rather than repetitious training.

Activity:

This breed is moderately active and requires space and daily walks.

Ownership:

While Tosas only have an average exercise requirement, they will be happier and healthier if they receive more exercise. These dogs should also have access to a well fenced yard or piece of land. However, Tosas are not suitable for kennel life, as they like to be close to their owners. This breed has an average life expectancy of 10 to 12 years and only requires occasional grooming.
