Egyptian Maus have been around since the time of ancient Egypt and have one of the longest histories of any cat breed in existence today. Egyptian Maus were worshipped as gods and images of these cats have been depicted on the tombs of Egyptian Pharohs. The modern Egyptian Mau, however, was developed in Italy in 1953 and first appeared in the United States during the late 1950s.
"Mau" is the Egyptian word for cat.
Although generally very extroverted and gregarious, Egyptian Maus can sometimes be shy around strangers. These cats love attention and are more than happy to be fussed over. While they may bond with one family member in particular, Egyptian Maus love the companionship of all familiar humans.

Cuddly and smart, Egyptian Maus will fetch specific toys when asked and they love to learn to do tricks. These cats are also quite good at traveling and have low maintenance coats. Due to their exotic appearance, its best to keep Egyptian Maus on a leash when outdoors in order to prevent them from being stolen by theives.
