Between 3-10 pounds (1.4-4.5 kg).

Height:

Between 7.75-9.75 inches (20-25 cm).

Maltese dogs are pure white in color.

Maltese have a single coat of long, silky hair.

Overview

Character:

Maltese are energetic and playful dogs. They're friendly and sociable and can sometimes be protective of their owners.

Country of Origin:

Possibly Switzerland.

History:

While the exact origins of this breed are unknown, it has been estimated by some to have been around for 2000 or 3000 years. Charles Darwin estimated that this breed originated in 6000 B.C. It's possible that the Maltese originated in the Swiss Lake region, as a descendant of a Spitz-type dog. However, there is also some evidence to support an Asian ancestry linked to the Tibetan Terrier.

Also known as the Bichon Maltaise.

Temperament:

Maltese are good-natured and intelligent dogs. They generally get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. These dogs are gentle and well-mannered.

Care

Training:

This breed is intelligent and eager to please and is thus easy to train. However, Maltese are sensitive dogs, so positive training techniques are best.

Activity:

Maltese are energetic and playful dogs, but they are quite good at adapting their activity level to match that of their family.

Ownership:

Maltese have non-shedding coats and require daily grooming. These dogs are great companion animals but don't like to be left alone for long periods of time. Maltese do well as apartment dwellers and are very good-natured. Due to their small size, these dogs can't handle rough play and, therefore, are not suitable for households with very small children.
