History:
This breed originated on the Spanish island of Majorca. Primarily created for dog fighting and bull-baiting, this breed's numbers dwindled when these practices were outlawed. While the Majorca Mastiff is still maintained by Spanish breeders, it remains rare.
Name:
This breed has many additional names, including Ca de Bou, Malloquin Mastiff, Mallorquin Bulldog, Perro Dogo Mallorquin, Majorcan Bulldog, and Perro de Presa Mallorquin.
Temperament:
These independent and strong-willed dogs can be very dominating and combative. As such, this breed is somewhat controversial.
Care
Training:
The Majorca Mastiff absolutely requires strict training by a very experienced handler.
Activity:
This breed is very active and has a high exercise requirement.
Ownership:
Majorca Mastiffs are only suitable for highly experienced and well-prepared dog owners due to their dominating and combative natures. This breed also requires lots of space and plenty of daily exercise. Regular grooming is also necessary for these dogs.
