Overview

Character:

Lurchers are very energetic and agile dogs that love to be outdoors. Lively and fun loving, these dogs are affectionate and joyful companions.

Country of Origin:

Ireland/Great Britain.

History:

This breed originated in Ireland and Great Britain and was developed by gypsies during the seventeenth century. Predominantly used for catching rabbits and other small game, Lurchers were highly prized among gypsies, especially the short-haired variety. Typically considered a crossbreed rather than an actual breed, the Lurcher has not been officially recognized by any major kennel clubs and does not have a specific standard. Although still common in Great Britain, this breed is fairly rare in the rest of the world.

Name:

The name of this breed is a derivation of the word "lur" which is Romany for "thief."

Temperament:

Lurchers are obedient dogs and fast learners. These dogs typically get along very well with people and can be very gentle companions.

Care

Training:

As intelligent animals, Lurchers learn quickly and are very trainable.

Activity:

Lurchers are high-energy dogs that require daily exercise and a safe, confined area where they can run and play.

Ownership:

Lurchers are ideal companions for active families that spend plenty of time outdoors. It's important for potential owners to keep in mind that these dogs are very talented escape artists so a Lurcher's yard must be contained with a high, sturdy fence. This breed has an average lifespan of approximately 13 years and requires regular brushing.
