Löwchen have long and silky coats. For shows, the Löwchen coat is cut to make the dog look like a lion.
Overview
Character:
Löwchen are lively and playful lapdogs. While perhaps better suited for adults, these dogs generally do get along well with children and make very affectionate house pets and family companions.
Country of Origin:
France.
History:
The Löwchen originated in France during the sixteenth century where the breed was highly cherished by the French nobility. Trimming the Löwchen's coat in a lion cut has been a custom since the 1500's and is still a standard practice with show dogs. This breed first appeared in the U.S. during the late twentieth century and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1995.

Additional names include Little Lion Dog and Petit Chien Lion.

The Löwchen is well-mannered and eager to please. These dogs are intelligent and have a happy disposition.

Löwchen are active little dogs that love to play.
Ownership:
Löwchen are excellent lapdogs and great companions. These dogs have non-shedding coasts, but if owners wish to maintain the traditional lion cut, professional grooming will be required. As well-mannered and friendly dogs, Löwchen are wonderful house pets.
