Character:
Kerry Blue Terriers are outgoing, spirited dogs. Great as companions for families and children, these dogs are very gentle and affectionate with the human members of their household.
Country of Origin:
Ireland.
History:
This breed was developed in Ireland during the 1800s and was used by farmers to hunt small game, to herd sheep and cattle, and to keep watch over farms. Although Kerry Blue Terriers have been around for centuries, they did not become particularly popular until about 1920. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1924.
Name:
Additional names include Irish Blue Terrier and Silver-Haired Irish Terrier.
Temperament:
Kerry Blue Terriers are assertive dogs, and are both intelligent and strong-willed. These high-spirited animals have a tendency to be dog aggressive are very friendly with people. Kerry Blue Terriers get along well with children.
Care
Training:
Early socialization is very necessary for Kerry Blue Terriers. While intelligent, these terriers are very strong-willed and assertive and are not very easy to train.
Activity:
Kerry Blue Terriers have a moderate to high activity requirement. These dogs require daily exercise and activities to prevent them from becoming bored or restless.
Ownership:
Due to their assertive nature, Kerry Blue Terriers are not ideal pets for every family. However, for skilled and active owners who are willing and able to give these dogs the time and attention they need, Kerry Blue Terriers can make excellent companions. These dogs do well in homes with children, but not in households with cats or other dogs.
