Physical Characteristics

Spitz family.

Approximately 55 pounds or 25 kg.

Height:

Approximately 18-22 inches (46-56 cm).

Color(s):

Kai dogs are solid in colour when born but then become either brindle, black brindle or red brindle in colour.

Coat:

This breed is characterised by a short, straight coat that is somewhat longer on the tail. These dogs also have soft and dense undercoats.

Character:

Kai dogs are very intelligent, courageous, and agile animals. These eager and friendly dogs are often good with children and can make excellent companions.

Country of Origin:

Japan.

History:

Considered the most ancient and pure Japanese dog breed, the Kai Ken developed from other Japanese breeds that are now extinct. Developed in the Kai district of Yamanashi Prefecture, this breed was primarily used for hunting. In 1934, the Kai Ken was given the status of a natural monument of Japan.

Name:

This breed was named for the Kai district where it was developed. Additional names for this breed include Kai Inu, Tora Inu, Tora Dog, and Tiger Dog.

Temperament:

These alert dogs are reserved around strangers and make vigilant guarddogs. Kai Kens are also natural hunters and are generally not aggressive with other dogs.


Care

Training:

These alert and eager dogs are relatively easy to train.

Activity:

The Kai Ken is quite active and requires significant space and exercise.

Ownership:

Potential owners should keep in mind that Kai dogs require plenty of daily exercise and considerable space where they can run around. While these dogs are natural hunters and excellent guard dogs, they can also be friendly companions and are often good with children. Kai Kens require weekly grooming to maintain their coats.
