History: The German Shepherd Dog may have originated from long-haired, short-haired and wire-haired shepherd dogs. As a fairly recent breed, this working dog served as a herding and farm dog, and also as servant and companion. In 1899 a breed club developed. The German Shepherd Dog rose in population after 1914.

Temperament: The German Shepherd Dog is approachable and poised. It should not be excitable. This breed can be a fighter and a life-long friend.

Training: This breed with its high learning ability requires firm training early in life. A trainer with a loving hand needs to help the dog become socialized to reduce over-guarding. Problems such as poor breeding, training and handling can result in aggression and attacks. If well-trained, this breed will be a fine family member.
Activity: With a love of strenuous activity and challenges, the German Shepherd Dog has fulfilled many careers in history: sheepdog, guide for the blind, guard dog, police work, military and search and rescue. This task-oriented dog is great at tracking, ring sport and agility exercises.
Ownership: The German Shepherd Dog can be close to families. This breed is cautious around strangers. Never isolate this dog for long lengths of time. Seek a reputable breeder. While this dog is inactive indoors, it requires a large yard to remain active and happy. The Germany Shepherd Dog has a life span of 13 years.
