Overview

Character:

Briards have big hearts and are very loving and affectionate with their family. These dogs have a strong herding instinct and are very protective.

Country of Origin:

France.

History:

Briards originated in France and their history stretches back to the time of Charlemagne. Descriptions and depictions of these dogs appear in records from the 1200's and in tapestries from the 1700's. A herder and protector of flocks, the Briard became very popular in France in 1897. The first record of American-born Briard puppies dates back to 1922.

Name:

Also known as Berger De Brie.

Temperament:

Briards are independent dogs that see themselves as companions rather than servants, and they are not overly eager to please. While wary and suspicious of strangers, Briards are very loving around their family members and people that are familiar to them.

Care

Training:

Briards are intelligent and have very good memories so they retain lessons well and are easy to train.

Activity:

Briards are working dogs and require daily exercise. They can move fast but aren't in constant motion like some dogs.

Ownership:

As long as they receive regular exercise, Briards make good house dogs. They love to play and are very loyal companions. These dogs do well in both the country and the city and will treat you more like a companion rather than a master or owner. Briards are devoted to and protective of children. Early obedience training is absolutely necessary for this breed.
