Bouvier des Flandres originated in Belgium during the seventeenth century and were developed to pull butchers' carts and to herd cattle. This breed nearly disappeared completely as a result of the two world wars, and Bouvier des Flandres first appeared in the United States during the 1930s.

Name:

Additional names include Belgian Cattle Dog, Flanders Cattle Dog, and Vlaamse Koehond.

Temperament:

While typically gentle and docile, Bouvier des Flandres can exhibit aggressiveness toward other dogs. Wary of strangers, these protective dogs make a good guard dogs as well as great companions.
