Breed Group:

Hound group.

Weight:

Between 75-105 pounds.

Height:

Between 27-31 inches at the shoulders.

Color(s):

Borzoi come in many different colors; however, white or white with colored markings are the most common colorings.

Coat:

Borzoi have long, silky coats that are thicker around the neck. These dogs can have a straight, wavy, or curly coat.

Overview

Character:

Borzoi are loyal and intelligent as well as quiet and independent. Gentle and well-mannered, these dogs hardly ever bark.

Country of Origin:

Russia.

History:

The Borzoi originated in Russia during the thirteenth century and was closely linked to Russian royalty. These dogs were bred to hunt wolves and hares and were known in the United States as Russian Wolfhounds until 1936.

Name:

Additional names include Russian Wolfhound, Barzoï, Russkaya Psovaya Borzaya, and Psovoi.

Temperament:

Borzoi are highly sensitive dogs that tend to be quite aloof. These animals do not like strangers and prefer adults to children. While attentive, Borzoi are also stubborn and don't respond well to criticism.

Care

Training:

Due to their sensitive nature, Borzoi don't respond well to criticism or harsh treatment. They are fast learners but quickly become bored with repetitive activities.

Activity:

Borzoi are moderately active dogs that like to have plenty of yard space and exercise.

Ownership:

Borzoi prefer the company of adults but can do well with children they're raised with if the children are introduced to them early on. These dogs are not suited to an environment where there are frequent loud noises or raised voices, as they are very sensitive to such things. Borzoi tend to be quite aloof, but when they choose to be, they can be attentive and loyal to their owners.
