Country of Origin:

England and Scotland.

Border Terriers originated in the land between England and Scotland and were bred by farmers. Used to flush foxes from their dens, these terriers were given their name sometime in the 1860s and were recognized as a breed by the English Kennel Club in 1920 and by the American Kennel Club in 1927.

Also known as the Coquetdale Terrier and the Reedwater Terrier.

While not as argumentative and stubborn as some other terriers, Border Terriers are still courageous and sometimes strong-willed. These dogs have big hearts, are eager to please, and are good with children and other animals.

Border Terriers are intelligent and love to please their owners, so they are very trainable. At the same time, owners must be careful not to inadvertently praise unwanted activities such as jumping up, as these terriers will likely repeat any behaviors that seem to please their human family members.

These terriers are very energetic and active. They love to play and require plenty of exercise.

Border Terriers make great family companions. They do well in households with children and other pets and like to receive lots of attention. These dogs will often match their activity level to that of their owners, but they love to play and exercise and are great at activities such as agility and obedience trials.
