Physical Characteristics

Breed Group:

Working molosser group.

Between 110-175 pounds (50-79.5 kg).

Males are approximately 64-70 cm at the withers while females are approximately 59-65 cm in height.

Standard colourings include red, brown, red-brown, brindle, and yellow.

Boerboels have short, sleek coats of dense fur.

Boerboels are intelligent and self-assured dogs. At the same time, they love the companionship of their owners and don't like to be left alone for long stretches of time.

Country of Origin:

South Africa.

This breed originated in South Africa, probably during the mid-seventeenth century when Dutch, British, and French settlers arrived in the country and brought several breeds of dogs with them. Boerboels were the only dogs bred in South Africa specifically for the purpose of guarding homesteads. These days, Boerboels are still bred in South Africa and are exported to many parts of the world.

Additional names for this breed include South African Boerboel and South African Mastiff.

Boerboels are dominant, fearless dogs with a strong guarding and watchdog instinct. This breed should never be left unattended around young children and should be carefully watched around strangers.

Boerboels are intelligent dogs but they require early socialization and obedience training in order to avoid excessive aggression.

These working dogs are quite active and require regular exercise.

Boerboels love human companionship but can become destructive if left alone for long stretches of time. These dogs should never be left unattended with small children and should be introduced at an early age to people and animals in order to avoid aggressive behaviour. Boerboels have a very strong guarding instinct and are wary of strangers. While these dogs can make very loving companions, they are best suited for experienced dog owners.

No breeders listed at this time.
